The Pickerel Frog, Ranapalustris, closely resembles the leopard frogs. Like the Leopard Frog, the Pickerel Frog is a medium sized frog that ranges from 3 to 3 and a half inches in
length, however, the Pickerel Frog has squarish/rectangular spots (usually in two parallel rows) on its back and bright yellow to orange pigmentation beneath their hind legs. It calls from the
cover of
vegetation along the edge of ponds and swamps. Males begin calling in early spring and continue until late summer. The call is a low pitched snore, lasting only 1-2 seconds and has
little carrying power. This species is known throughout Kentucky, with the exception of the Jackson Purchase and western coal fields.
