Green Treefrog  (Hyla cinerea)

Green Treefrog (Hyla cinerea)

One of Kentucky's most brightly colored frogs is the Green Treefrog, Hyla cinerea.  They are a bright green during the breeding season with a white or pale yellow stripe along the dorsolateral surface.  These frogs measure from 2 to 2 and a half inches in length and are found mainly in wooded swamps and marshes throughout the Jackson Purchase.  A disjunct population

is also known in Henderson County within a few swamps along the Ohio River.  The males begin to call with the coming of the warm rains of early summer and continue to call thoughout the summer months.  The call has a bell-like ringing quality that is repeated up to 75 times a minute in warm weather, and can be paraphrased as "queenk-queenk-queenk".
