The Crawfish Frog, Ranaareolata, is restricted to the Jackson Purchase and portions of the western coal fields. This frog ranges in length from 2 and a half to 4
inches, has a stubby body and is distinguished by its dark spots with light borders on its back, and its pure white belly. A secretive frog, it spends most of its life underground in pastures,
prarie remnants, and
grasslands, often living in the burrows made by mammals or crawfish. After heavy spring rains, these frogs emerge from their underground chambers and congregate in ponds, flooded
fields, or in wet meadows. The breeding chorus is a loud resonant snore that carries well over distance. The breeding period begins in February and ends by the middle of April. After breeding,
the Crawfish Frog retreat back to their underground homes.
